Enjoy a calm evening paddle with experienced guides and explore the world of wild creatures that inhabit the shores and waters of Lake Whitehurst. Kayaks and other necessary equipment supplied.

*Great for beginners: pre-trip instruction, no experience necessary.

CREATURE FEATURE - BAT WATCH

Discover an amazing world of bats with this night walk & talk. Track bats in the night sky with a bat detector. Explore bat legends and misconceptions. Learn how you can control your lawn and garden pests while contributing to conservation of these unique animals. Dr. Tatyana Lobova, Assistant Professor at Old Dominion University and Research Associate of New York Botanical Garden, is a specialist on fruit-eating bats in the tropics and will lead the excursion. Bring flashlight & walking shoes.

Limited supplies of bat houses will be available for purchase at $25 each.

Learn about the plants, animals and insects that come alive in the evening as others settle into slumber.  Wear your walking shoes & let Education Program Manager Perry Mathewes guide you through the twilight in the Garden.

DANCING IN THE GARDEN

These are "Walk In, Dance Out" beginner friendly classes.  Ages 12 & Up

Dancing Under the Stars

Wednesdays • June 4- July 9 • 7-8:30pm

You've watched it on TV, now you too can learn to Ballroom Dance! Come and enjoy as Certified Dance Instructors teach you how to keep your feet moving all night long. Learn such dances as the Foxtrot, Waltz, and Tango.

Spice Up Your Summer with Salsa!  

4-week series

Wednesdays • August 6- August 27 • 7-8:30pm

You've seen the hottest moves on the dance floor, now come and make your summer nights sizzling hot!  Learn Latin dances such as the Merengue, Cha-Cha and Mambo so that you can live the rhythm.

AFRICAN DANCE

Welcome to the wonderful world of African Dance, guaranteed to energize your mind, spirit and body!  Learn fun, easy-to-learn styles of African dance with dance instructor Linda Suttonout in Garden weather permitting or inside overlooking the Bicentennial Rose Garden.

All levels of experience.  Wear comfortable dance and workout clothes.

INTRODUCTION TO ARGENTINE TANGO CLASS

Tuesdays • 7:30-9:30 PM • 4-week session

Argentine Tango is passionate & playful - a fun way to stay fit and add sizzle to your life.  Learn the fundamental vocabulary of Argentine Tango in one of Hampton Roads most romantic settings.  Open to singles and couples.  World renowned tango instructor Linda Sutton featured in Tidewater Women and PortFolio Weekly, specializes in teaching all levels - even those with two left feet.

BUTTERFLY ID WALK

Tuesday • August 12 • 1-3PM

Join Ruth Burch, charter member and four time past-president of the Butterfly Society of Virginia, on an informative talk before strolling through the Bristow Butterfly Garden. There are more than 42 varieties of butterflies that are native to this area. Learn how to identify butterflies and attract these flying flowers to your garden.

LUNAR ECLIPSE MOTH WALK

Saturday • August 16 • 7-8:30PM

Stroll through the Bristow Butterfly (Moth) Garden with naturalist, long time member and special consultant to the Butterfly Society of Virginia Teta Kain. Watch as the night beckons a marvelous moon dance of flying flowers. The lunar eclipse seen in this region will only be the chance spotting of a lunar moth. Come out to see what wonders may appear as moths are attracted to special lights.

OWL PROWL

Saturday ­ September 27 ­ 7:30-9:30PM
Join Wildlife Biologist Don Schwab as the hush falls over the forest and darkness creeps through the trees in search of magnificent night hunters. Norfolk Botanical Garden is home to three species: barred owls, great horned owls and eastern screech owls. Dress for walking in the woods – including insect repellant, a flashlight & walking shoes.

This popular program fills quickly; register early.

Garden HATHA YOGA

Wednesdays • 9:30-10:30AM • 5-week sessions

Session A: August 6- September 3

Session B: September 24- October 22

Enjoy the panoramic vista of our beautiful Rose Garden Hall while learning basic yoga poses (asanas) and breathing (prana) techniques with Yoga Alliance Instructor for Hatha Yoga Mollie Robertson, RYT.  In this class you will learn positions for strength and flexibility in the body and deep relaxation and breath work for a calm and centered mind.

TAI CHI

BEGINNING TAI CHI

Thursdays • July 3 – September 25 • 7-8:30PM

12 –weeks (no class July 17)

Tai Chi is best described as a “moving meditation exercise.” This slow-moving, gentle exercise program taught by Patrick Delauder, certified instructor, is appropriate for every body type, age or physical condition. Classes will be inside with Garden views or out in the Garden when weather permits.

Students should come with comfortable clothes, shoes and an open heart and mind.

Cost: $165 ($135 for NBG Members)

Price includes membership registration to the Taoist Tai Chi Society.

GARDENS OF THE CARIBBEAN

Join Dr. Bonnie Appleton, Professor of Horticulture at Virginia Tech, for a seven-night cruise to the Caribbean visiting the Mamika Gardens on St. Lucia and the Andromeda Botanic Gardens on Barbados. Arriving at peak blooming season, you will have the opportunity to see thousands of orchids, hundreds of hibiscus and many varieties of ferns, begonias, palms and other species that grow in splendid profusion. Dr. Appleton will hold onboard lectures and special learning opportunities. Spaces are limited!
